Hughson and he was the village lawyer from approx. 1935 until the time of his death in 1961. Also my uncle was William Beardon and I believe they each lived in the same house, at different times. I came to visit the area about three years ago. Some folks still remembered my grandad which was lovely. The village is beautiful. I met a woman on the train yesterday who recently moved to the area and she was very positive about the changes that were taking place in the village. It sounds like a very viable place to live. During WW1 the name Sarau was dropped and was called Upper Moutere until recently when the old name was included. We are located in the Nelson region which is similar in many ways to your Nelson up there in Canada being an alternative/arts center of the country. The region, set on Tasman Bay has the highest sunshine hours in the country and is surrounded by National Parks making it the most popular region in NZ. At Neudorf a school opened in 1870 and closed in 1997 due to falling rolls and other schools in close proximity. Between those years Neudorf too was a close knit community predominately of German decedents. Unfortunately over the past few years the region has been in the grips of a property boom with the NZ dollar exchange rate, the unspoilt environment and wonderful climate making it a sort after place to live. This is even more so evident now with the threat of war with Iraq with property agents being inundated with emails from people from the Northern Hemisphere wanting to live here. Unfortunately with change comes those who have less of an affinity to the German heritage and it is quickly dieing out. At our last community meeting a decision was made to sell the Neudorf Hall with funding going towards a newer hall in the region. I would have hoped that in some way the German heritage of the area be retained but it appears that market value of land far outrides cultural significance. Neudorf in NZ will soon be just a name on a street sign marking a once rich historic community. Thanks for the opportunity to visit your community. It is my understanding that the community of Neudorf was established by Germans from Russia and Austria (now Ukraine). There was a "Neudorf" in the Black Sea area established about 1804. I would like to find information about one of the pioneer families that may have helped found Neudorf in Saskatchewan, modelled after the Ukraine colony. The family name was: Goebel. My starting point is a John Carl Goebel, born in Melville, Saskatchewan in 1907. He was in the Regina Rifles in World War II and he died in Cobourg, Ontario in 1964. He married a Violet Myrtle Martin (1915- ?) in Regina in 1937. Because the earliest settlers spoke in their native German language, it is possible the name on record was Johann Karl Göbel. I am trying to determine if his family had a homestead in Neudorf. Then I would like to find out what route they took to get there (i.e. did they come via the USA or via Halifax) and from which town they originated in Europe.
